Description

Carbon Fiber Composite tool shafts, alongside PEEK tool shafts, form the backbone of elite Polycraft World Tools. While not as durable as engineered PEEK-based or gripped tools, Carbon Fiber Composite tools mine the fastest and share the highest attack potential with engineered tools.

The current method to obtain these items in Polycraft is, in part, based on the Japanese method of manufacturing carbon fiber from Polyacrylonitrile fibers.

Tutorial

The following guide assumes that you are in possession of decent amounts of crude oil, sea/salt water, Nitrogen, and various other materials such as Hydrogen and are at least a level 7 Polycrafter or at least have access to machines as complex as a Chemical Processor. This tutorial is performed on a medium beaker/cartridge scale.

The main ingredients for a Carbon Fiber Composite tool shaft are the mold, the Epoxy-Carbon Fiber resin, and the items needed to operate an Injection Molder: a fuel and a bucket of water. The mold for the tool shaft can be milled with a variety of ingots depending on the desired mold durability. For brevity, only Aluminum is shown for its abundance at medium depths. The diagram for molding the shaft is also shown below.

The primary challenge for creating Carbon Fiber Composite tool shafts is synthesizing the Epoxy-Carbon Fiber resin, which consists of three key ingredients:

Epichlorohydrin


As complex as its name sounds, only a few (but possibly time-consuming to obtain) raw materials are required to synthesize it:

To begin, use Platinum Catalysts to process the salt water into its assorted contents to obtain Chlorine and deionized water. Then combine these resulting ingredients with the Propylene to obtain Epichlorohydrin. Any remaining deionized water can be further processed using more Platinum Catalysts to obtain Hydrogen and Oxygen, which are needed for the next two primary ingredients.

Carbon Fiber Weave


The Carbon Fiber Weave is arguably the easiest out of the three key ingredients to synthesize as it is only composed of five Carbon fibers in an 'X' pattern.

To obtain Carbon fibers, several raw or partially-distilled ingredients are needed:

First, use the Nitrogen and Hydrogen (in a 1:3 ratio) alongside Iron (III) Oxide Catalysts to create Ammonia, then combine the Ammonia with the Propylene to make Acrylonitrile.

Upon obtaining the Acrylonitrile, it can be smelted in a Furnace or Industrial Oven to polymerize it into PolyAcrylonitrile, henceforth referred to as PAN. Afterwards, downcast any sacks of PAN into bags and extrude it into fibers. The resulting fibers can be smelted into Carbon fibers. These can then be crafted into the Carbon Fiber Weave as described above. Alternatively, armor equivalent to Diamond tier armor can be crafted from Carbon fibers.

Bisphenol A


This seemingly-controversial chemical is the final ingredient needed for the synthesis of the Epoxy-Carbon Fiber resin and requires a quite a few starting materials:

To start, use Benzene, Propylene, and Zeolite Catalysts to create Cumene ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Combine the resulting Cumene with more Oxygen to obtain Phenol and Acetone. Next, process Buckets of Lava using Iron (III) Oxide Catalysts into Sulfuric Acid, which can be scaled down into vials. Finally, the Phenol, Acetone, and Sulfuric Acid are combined to make Bisphenol A.

The resulting beakers can be turned into vials for molding into tool shafts. Materials such as (but not limited to) Iron Ingots, Tungsten Carbide Ingots, and Diamonds can be used in conjunction with the shafts to make elite composite tools. With this recipe for beakers, one beaker each of Epichlorohydrin and Bisphenol A and a single Carbon Fiber Weave will be used for each beaker of Epoxy-Carbon Fiber resin.

As a warning, do not use only one beaker of Epichlorohydrin and Bisphenol A as the processor recipe for such will only yield a single vial of resin and waste Carbon Fiber Weaves.
